A little history lesson. The pilgrims set ground at Plymouth Rock on Dec. 11,1620. Their first winter was devastating loosing almost half of the original 102 who sailed on the Mayflower. But the harvest of 1621 was a bountiful one. The remaiming colonists decided to celebrate with a feast including 91 indians who helped the pilgrims survive the first year. It is thought that no colonists would have made it through the winter without the help of the natives. The feast was not repeated the following year, but in 1623 they had it. It wasn’t untill 1676 that another day of Thanksgiving was proclaimed on June 29th. It is notable that this celebration did not include indians as the celebration was meant partly to be in recognition of the colonists recent victory over the heathen natives. Oct. 1777 marked the first time all 13 colonies joined in a Thanksgiving celebration. George Washington proclaimed a national day of Thanksgiving in 1789, and later Thomas Jefferson unproclaimed it. It was Sarah Josepha Hale a magazine editor whose efforts eventually led to what we recognize as Thanksgiving. After a 40 year campaign of writing editorials and letters to the governors and presidents. Hale’s obsession became a reality when in 1863 President Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in Nov. as a national day of Thanksgiving. Franklin Roosevelt changed the date and then changed it back 2 years later. And in 1941 Thanksgiving was finally sanctioned by Congress as a legal holiday, as the 4th thursday in Nov.

Shorter history lesson. Pilgrims came to Plymoth rock. Indians helped them survive and eventually thrive. Pilgrims thrive so much they realize thry no longer need the natives. Pilgrims massacare natives in the name of progress. Indians later revolt and more get massacared. Few years later not many Indians left people from the new world start to feel bad and give them their own lands in the form of tiny reservations. Few years later some drunk indian on some reservation has an idea an opens a casino. Few years later I take all my college savings and go to the casino. Few hours later I leave the indian casino with nothing. Few minutes later I jump in front of a moving truck. Few days later I wake up in the hospital. Few hours later I find out I needed a blood transfusion from a family member. In the confusion I find out that my mothers, uncles, sisters, cousins, wifes, adopted former exchange student was 1/4 Creek Indian, whitch is enough to get me a full ride to any college in the country. Few years later I graduate with a PHD in Early American History and make a mint hitting the lecture sceen. Few years later I take my life savings including my kids college funds to the high rollers lounge at the local casino and loose everything to a black jack dealer by the name of “Little Big Chicken Beak”, and here I am at a soup kitchen drinking Crazy Horse out of a brown paper bag, and eating Thanksgiving dinner out of a paper bowl. I don’t really know where I was going with that but anyway have a good T-day.
