Superman Returns

June 28th, 2006 | Category: Fun

So, I saw Superman Returns last night. I still don’t know what to make of this flick.

First off, it was entertaining. It was very long (2hrs 34min) but it didn’t seem to drag on much. The opening credits were just like the first 2 Superman flicks, which was great. Plus the music was the same, so if you’ve seen and enjoyed the originals, this movie has a great feel to it.

The parts where Superman was being Superman doing super shit, were awesome. The effects were great. The actors were great. Kevin Spacey nails Lex Luthor. One minute he’s kind of a likeable mild bad guy, the next a ruthless villian. He did a great job. Parker Posey, who played Kitty Kowalski Luthors right hand man, was hilarious. She’s almost type cast to play the quirky girl, but she does a good job of it. Brandon Routh, who plays Superman, is a friggin Christopher Reeves clone. It’s creepy how much he’s like Reeves rendition of the character. He even sounds like him. I can honestly say that there isn’t anyone else on the planet that would have been a better Superman. He was perfect. Kate Bosworth did a decent job playing Lois. The only problem I had with her is how young she is. I mean, if this movie takes place 5 years after Superman 2(this was eluded to in the film), then how did Lois get 10 years younger? I know it’s not Bosworths fault, and nobody wants to see a 55 year old Lois Lane, but everytime she was on screen it just didn’t seem to fit.

The one thing I didn’t like about this movie was how much of a love story it was. There was a lot of love story going on. A lot. So much so, that I think it’s keeping me from loving the movie. I’m not totally sure yet, as it usually takes a day for a movie to completely sink in.

5 years gone. They had to explain how everyone is dealing with his return. I get it. But this is a sequel. We know the characters. They actually make a few references to Superman 2, if you’re a geek enough to notice them. (which I am) I understand that director Bryan Singer was trying to develope the characters to get everyone caught up. I just think it was a little much. I really think that movie could have been scaled down to 2hrs without losing much. I expected a super hero movie, with a love back story. What I saw was a love story, with a super hero back story. Even during some of the big super hero scenes, they interupted the action to add more love story sequences.

As of right now, I’m on the fence. I’m glad I saw it, and will for sure watch it again, I just can’t tell yet if it will seem long the second time through.

Weekend, and my week to come…

June 26th, 2006 | Category: Fun

How was everyones weekend? Mine was okay. I’m still jockin’ the vette, so that’s cool. On Saturday debbie came over and her and Kel sat out by the pool all day. Kel got absolutely fried in the sun, and was actually sick all Saturday night. She could barely move yesterday. Her skin was purple. Now that I know shes okay, it’s pretty funny when you think about it.

This week is going to drag on, I can already tell. 8:17am on Monday, and it seems like I’ve been at work a month already. I do have tickets to see Superman Returns tomorrow night. They are showing an advanced screening, and Kel bought our tickets online. I still think that we need to get there like 4 hours before the show. We’ll see. I’m going to start bringin my camera with me when I hit these movies on opening day. I wish I had pictures of those assholes dressed like Jedi’s at the Star Wars Episode 3 opener. Better yet, pics of the total dildos at the Matrix revelations opener, dressed like Neo.

The first person I see that is dressed as Superman, is getting punched in the face.

Speaking off which, I forgot to tell Chris that we got him a ticket. I think I’ll call him right now, wake him up, and tell him the good news.

Motorola Q/Treo 700W comparison

June 19th, 2006 | Category: Fun

I decided because I couldn’t figure out which to keep, that I would do a little comparison to see how each phone stacked up against the other.

Form factor
The Q is thin. Really thin. Even in the clip, it has an extremely small footprint. Overall, it is a nice looking phone. However, given the fact that it is wider then the Treo, when it’s in your hand it doesn’t actually feel smaller. Plus, and this is kind of weird, but the Treo’s rounded edges are more comfortable to hold on to then the Q’s sharp ones. Overall, the Q might be thinner then a RZR, but it’s just not as comfortable to use. The Q is easier to carry in your pocket, by far, but given the fact that the Treo has much more functionality, and actually feels more solid in your hands, I’ll give this round to the Treo.(bad for the Q since this is one of the main selling points)
Advantage-Treo

Reception
No question about it, the Q blows away any other hybrid phone available today. It’s not even close. I wish whatever radio antenna they used on this phone, was used on every phone.
Advantage-Q

Functionality
This is where the Treo runs away with this comparison. First off, you have to know that the Treo runs on Windows Mobile 5 PPC edition. The Q runs on WM5 Smartphone edition. The Smartphone edition is purposely scaled down, and is not supposed to do everything that the PPC edition does. However, one would think that it would carry over the phone enhancements from the PPC OS, since those are specifically designed for the phone! I just don’t get this. For example, when sending an SMS message, you can just start typing in the name of the contact and the phone will do a filter search, as you type. Once you get your contact, hit the right key, and you can add another on in the same manor. The Q however, doesn’t do this at all. To pick a contact, you have to launch your contacts list, then search through it, select the contact, which then puts you back at the main screen. If you wanted to send a message to multiple contacts, you would have to do this for each person. This is a huge pain if you send a lot of multiple recipient messages. Taking this out of the Smartphone edition makes no sense, since this is not a PPC function.
The one handed use on the Q isn’t bad, but it isn’t as good as the Treo either. There is a scroll wheel on the side, with a back button just like the Blackberry, but it’s pretty useless for everything except web browsing. Navigating through the different screens is painfully slow on the Q also. It’s like trying to navigate through your desktop computer, without a mouse. Sure, it can be done, but once you’ve used a mouse, why would you ever not? This is the touch screen/non touch screen comparison. The Q doesn’t have one, the Treo does. The Q isn’t a PDA, which is why it doesn’t have one, but it runs on an OS that was originally designed for PDA’s. For someone who has never used a PDA, this might not be an issue. But if you’ve ever used Windows Mobile, you will immediately notice something is missing. The ability to quickly navigate anywhere using the stylus.
The Q also launches everything slowly. There is always a second delay after pressing a button. Trust me, this gets really annoying. Okay, so you can only stuff a processor so big in the Q’s small frame, but there needs to be a balance of what is sacrificed, to what is gained. A small footprint is not worth it, if the phone doesn’t do what it should.
Advantage-Treo with 2 points since this is the most important

Battery Life
The Treo annihilates the Q in this department. The Treo has better battery life then my old Motorola V710 clam shell phone. I don’t know what kind of battery they used in this thing, but it’s fantastic.
Advantage-Treo

Screen
One of the biggest complaints about the Treo 700 is the crappy 240×240 screen. It’s no more apparent then when you have it side by side with a Q. The Q screen in 240×320, and brighter with higher contrast then the Treo could ever dream about. It’s not even a fair comparison. The Q wins, hands down.
Advantage-Q

Camera
First, this isn’t a big deal. I bought a Canon SD450 because I wanted a camera to carry around in my pocket. My phone will never be my only camera option. That said, no one carry’s their camera around with them all the time. So it’s nice to have a good second option built into your phone. The Q’s camera is simply the best digital camera on a phone that I’ve ever seen. It’s a 1.3mp camera, just like everything else out right now, but it takes better pics then anything available. Combine the picture quality, the amount of options (6x zoom) and the bright screen, and this phone is tops in this category, no matter what’s up against it.
Advantage-Q

Community
In this age of computer type phones, I believe that community can be important. The amount of data available to you, about your hardware can make all the difference in the world. Much like the iPod, the Treo has a cult-like following. There are multiple fan sites that have been operating for a long time already, and are not going anywhere. With this, you get a lot of options, input and information. For the Q, who knows.
Advantage-Treo

Looking at the scores, 5-3 in favor of the Treo, it appears that these phones are pretty close. However when you look at what the Treo was better in, there really is no comparison. The Treo wins hands down.

If you’ve never had a smart phone, or any convergence device, the Q might be a good solution for you. You might not notice it’s short comings. But if you’ve ever used some sort of hybrid device you will immediately recognize that the Q is lacking in a lot of areas. If you’ve never had a car, you would love it if someone gave you a Ford Escort. If you drove a Ferrari, you would hate that same Ford Escort.

I really wanted to love this phone. I wanted to replace my Treo with something smaller and lighter. After a few days, when I didn’t love the Q and I was searching for reasons to like it, I knew it wasn’t the right device. I tried to be subjective, and remember that the Q isn’t supposed to do everything that the Treo does. The problem is that what the Q does do, it doesn’t do well. This could have been a great device. Motorola got the form factor down pretty well, but Microsofts OS just killed any chance this thing had. They called this a Blackberry killer. The Blackberry, for the most part, does one thing, mobile email. It also does it very well. The Q tries to do too much, and ultimately fails. For Smartphones, Microsoft should have started from scratch instead of porting their PPC OS.

I’m returning my Q today, and going back to my Treo. I’ve actually missed it.

Vette

June 16th, 2006 | Category: Fun

My inlaws are in Greece, or visiting the mother land, as I like to call it.

So, while they’re gone, I accidentally went to their house, dropped off my truck, and picked up Ron’s vette. I didn’t mean to, it just happened.

So this is what I’m driving the next two weeks:
Vette

That would be the one in front, the convertible. 03′ 50th anniversary Corvette. Good times, fa sho!

Guy at the gas station this morning said: “man, that thing really shines!”
I replied: “yeah, it’s okay. Gets me from A to B”

Then I took off out of there like I stole it!!

j/k Ron…..or am I?

um…in the filter?

June 12th, 2006 | Category: Not Fun

Okay, so I’m home, minding my own business I might add, and all of a sudden, I hear Kel screaming bloody murder in the backyard.

Wait a second, what the hell does that mean “screaming bloody murder”? I mean, why not screaming “terrible car crash” or “screaming giant shark attack”?

Anyway, so Kels outside screaming “giant shark attack”. I run outside, expecting who knows what. I get out on the patio, and Kel runs up to me white as a ghost. I ask her what’s wrong and she says:
“THERE IS A GIANT RAT IN THE POOL FILTER!!”
I say: “WHAT?!?”
She repeats: “A GIANT RAT IN THE FILTER!”

At this point, I’m less concerned with something in the filter, and more concerned with the possibility of a big ass rat at our house. To me, that’s a bigger problem, and it would equal, time to get the fuck out of Warren.

I say: “Are you sure it’s a rat?”
She says: “I don’t know what the hell it is, it’s big and fuzzy and in the filter!”

She was a little frazzled. So I go over to pool at which point I decided that I was going to look down on it from the the deck. One, in case it’s alive, I don’t want it jumping on my face like in Alien, and two, to get a good look at what it is. (the catch for the filter, which is where this thing is stuck, is right next to the deck)

Well, I’m happy to say, it wasn’t a rat. It was, however, a big ass squirrel. We have this huge tree in our yard, kind of next to the pool. It’s about 15 feet away, but the branches hang over the pool. Apparently, this squirrel wasn’t as sure-footed as it thought, and it fell from the tree and landed in the pool. Now, it would appear that squirrels can’t swim.

I now, after all these years, completely understand that old video of the water skiing squirrel. The little bastard was too afraid to get off the skis, because it knew it would die.

Best guess is, it drowned in the pool, and then got sucked in the filter catch. So Kel says that she isn’t going to touch it. Now me, being the man of the house, born and raised in the suburbs of Detroit, I stated that there was no friggin way I was going to touch it. I’m not out-doorsy. It’s not my thing. I camp at the Holiday Inn. If, by some weird nuero-knee jerk reaction that happens to squirrels when they drown, I grabbed this thing, and it fucking moved, I’d lose it. Let’s just say that is a future therapy bill I just don’t need.

However, getting it out, and touching it are two different things. I may not be back-woodsy, but I’m smart. So I went in the garage, got a hook (I need it for my heater in there) and hooked the trap in the filter catch, and pulled the whole thing out. We then dumped the trap in a bag, then bagged that bag in a freezer bag, then bagged that bag in another bag. Our garbage pickup isn’t till next week, and we don’t want dead squirrel smell attracting any other animals, or just lingering outside since I would imagine, it’s not pleasant.

It would appear that my backyard is a death trap for small fuzzy animals. If you know any, tell them to stay away. If the lawn mower doesn’t get them, the pool will.

Motorola Q

June 08th, 2006 | Category: Fun

Okay, so maybe I have issues when it comes to cell phones. I do like to stay on top of technology.

The Motorola Q came out this week. It just so happened that I was at the mall the day it was released. What a coincidence. Might as well stop in and see it, just to check it out and see if it lives up to all the hype.

Pic:
Moto Q

Verizon has a 15 day no questions asked return policy, so I figured i’d give the phone a shot. So far, I think I love it. I’m not totally sure though. It’s a smartphone, opposed to a PDA phone like my Treo700w. The smartphone OS is a downscaled version of Windows Mobile 5. It doesn’t have Pocket Word, Excel or Powerpoint, but you can view these files with the included Picsel Viewer. (you just can’t edit them, view only)

At first I thought this might be a big deal, but then I realized that I don’t edit these files anyway. Very rarely will I even view them. So that’s no big deal.

The biggest difference is this phone doesn’t have a touchscreen interface. No use for a stylus at all. If I was still using my XV6600, this would be a really tough adjustment for me. Since I got my Treo however, I’ve come to love one handed use with the 5-way navigation buttons, and I see this as a positive instead of a negative.

The reception on this phone is excellent. That’s where this phone buries all other hybrid phones. It’s a cell phone first, and a PIM(personal imformation manager) second. When talking on it, it feels like a cell phone, and not a PDA.

Size wise, there is no comparison. The form factor of this phones is kick ass. It’s a smartphone running WM5, with wireless email syncing, web surfing, PIM, and a sweet cell phone, in a package thinner then the Motorola RZR.

That was THINNER THEN THE RZR!

This is why they dubbed this device the RZRBerry. Black Berry beating features in a package smaller then the RZR. Good stuff.

On the negative side, it doesn’t feel as solid as my Treo when you’re holding it. I know that this comes with the size differential, but I got to tell you, that Treo is tough as hell. I bought a clip from TreoCentral and they sent me a clip for a 650. (they were, and still are selling this as a 700 clip, even after they told me they messed up and would fix it, fuck that place I would never buy from there again)

Anyway, the 650 clip doesn’t hold the 700 very well, so my phone has hit the concrete at least 4 times, plus numerous times in my house or office, dropping from my hip. This thing never skips a beat. It’s a fricken soldier, thats for sure.

The Q doesn’t seem like it could take that kind of abuse. I might be able to, but I’m not going to test it and see. Also, I think I miss the fully functioning PDA features. I’ve been using a Windows based PDA for a long time now, and losing some of that functionality bothers me. I just don’t know if it bothers me because I’m losing the options, or because I’m not used to this new interface.

So as of right now, I’m on the fence. I love the form factor of the Q, but I’m not quit used to the interface yet, and find myself missing the full PDA functionality.

But God damn, this thing is thin….
