Motorola Q
Okay, so maybe I have issues when it comes to cell phones. I do like to stay on top of technology.
The Motorola Q came out this week. It just so happened that I was at the mall the day it was released. What a coincidence. Might as well stop in and see it, just to check it out and see if it lives up to all the hype.

Verizon has a 15 day no questions asked return policy, so I figured i’d give the phone a shot. So far, I think I love it. I’m not totally sure though. It’s a smartphone, opposed to a PDA phone like my Treo700w. The smartphone OS is a downscaled version of Windows Mobile 5. It doesn’t have Pocket Word, Excel or Powerpoint, but you can view these files with the included Picsel Viewer. (you just can’t edit them, view only)
At first I thought this might be a big deal, but then I realized that I don’t edit these files anyway. Very rarely will I even view them. So that’s no big deal.
The biggest difference is this phone doesn’t have a touchscreen interface. No use for a stylus at all. If I was still using my XV6600, this would be a really tough adjustment for me. Since I got my Treo however, I’ve come to love one handed use with the 5-way navigation buttons, and I see this as a positive instead of a negative.
The reception on this phone is excellent. That’s where this phone buries all other hybrid phones. It’s a cell phone first, and a PIM(personal imformation manager) second. When talking on it, it feels like a cell phone, and not a PDA.
Size wise, there is no comparison. The form factor of this phones is kick ass. It’s a smartphone running WM5, with wireless email syncing, web surfing, PIM, and a sweet cell phone, in a package thinner then the Motorola RZR.
That was THINNER THEN THE RZR!
This is why they dubbed this device the RZRBerry. Black Berry beating features in a package smaller then the RZR. Good stuff.
On the negative side, it doesn’t feel as solid as my Treo when you’re holding it. I know that this comes with the size differential, but I got to tell you, that Treo is tough as hell. I bought a clip from TreoCentral and they sent me a clip for a 650. (they were, and still are selling this as a 700 clip, even after they told me they messed up and would fix it, fuck that place I would never buy from there again)
Anyway, the 650 clip doesn’t hold the 700 very well, so my phone has hit the concrete at least 4 times, plus numerous times in my house or office, dropping from my hip. This thing never skips a beat. It’s a fricken soldier, thats for sure.
The Q doesn’t seem like it could take that kind of abuse. I might be able to, but I’m not going to test it and see. Also, I think I miss the fully functioning PDA features. I’ve been using a Windows based PDA for a long time now, and losing some of that functionality bothers me. I just don’t know if it bothers me because I’m losing the options, or because I’m not used to this new interface.
So as of right now, I’m on the fence. I love the form factor of the Q, but I’m not quit used to the interface yet, and find myself missing the full PDA functionality.
But God damn, this thing is thin….
