Why can’t you fire someone for getting pregnant? Kelly and I had this discussion yesterday. I saw that Sting and his wife were ordered to pay their ex-chef $51k because she says they fired her because she was pregnant, which prompted me to ask…why? I understand that I, as an employer, can’t keep you from having kids. That’s not what I’m saying. I’m just saying that if you’re going to have kids, you can’t work here. No, it’s not like firing someone because they’re black. It would be like firing someone who was white, then became black. Since that’s not possible, that analogy doesn’t work. I do see how it could be like firing someone who contracted aids though. The difference being intent. No one, to my knowledge, tries to go out and get aids. Now that I think about it, that would leave kind of a gray area as to whether or not someone meant to get pregnant.
