Presidential Debates

So Friday night was the first debate. You guys watch it? I try to watch it with an open mind since I’m always a voter on the fence. I don’t align my self with any party really, I like to vote for the individual. I both agree and disagree with policies from both parties, and with this stupid two party system that we have now, I can’t see just voting for one side or the other without taking in account policy.

Anyway, I thought the debate was pretty good. Right out of the gate I thought that Obama was going to really pull ahead when he started with his points of what needs to be done about this financial crisis. That’s what I want to hear. I don’t want to hear why I shouldn’t vote for the other guy, I want to hear why I should vote for you. I really thought that McCain was in trouble. Once the debate switched from the economy over to foreign policy, the whole tone changed. McCain stepped up at that point and took over. Overall, I think Obama showed a little better then McCain, but it was close. Each candidate held their own with what I expected them too. I do think there were some moments of clear losers though. The insults were stupid. I’m not watching this to watch an hour and a half of campaign ads, I want to know what the candidates are going to do to better our country.

Speaking of campaign ads, I love the new Obama ads which are just him talking about his policies. Whether or not I agree with what he’s doing or saying, I love the idea behind the campaign. No mud slinging, just here is what I’m going to do if you pick me. I would love to see the right do the same thing. I almost immediately tune out once I hear the same old “this person is an asshole, don’t vote for him” shit that almost every campaign ad has. Whomever came up with this new strategy for the ads was a genius, IMO.

I must be honest though, I can’t wait till next Thursday for the VP debate. On one hand, you have Biden who is loud and crazy, and on the other hand, you have Palin. When the Republicans announced Palin as McCains running mate I had arguments with people I know because thought it was a horrible idea. One, she’s as green as Obama, so they take away that piece of ammunition from themselves. Two, if the sole purpose of using her was to try and steal the Hillary votes, then it was also a stupid plan since as far as the issues are concerned, Palin couldn’t be farther away from Hillary. It’s also pretty insulting to woman thinking that they would ignore the policies and vote for Palin because she and Hillary have a matching set of crotch luggage.

Here’s the thing though. I’ve seen Palin now a couple of times and man, she does not speak well. She’s actually pretty terrible in interviews. I don’t remember ever seeing a VP candidate change in the middle of the race, but I think the republicans should rethink that pick. She’s fucking awful. Thursday should be fun. I would love to see the coaching thats going on on both sides right now.
